Devlog#5 Water Shaders, Level Design and more...

Hello fellow penguins!

We are in the middle of our first production sprint, and our game is evolving rapidly. We worked on a lot of things this week, and without further ado, we are going to start with the art progress.

In the asset department, we revamped the penguin models. Now they have cute little scarfs, better topology and cleaner UVs!

The polar bear also began transforming from blockout to final model.

We tried out different animations on mixamo to see what could work for movements like the throwing or idle poses. However they are still very wonky.

The submarine also started taking shape in both concepting and modelling:

Our water is now alive! Meaning to say, we made a cool water shader with a shader graph.

We made a bunch of different ones and then combined them into the version you can see in the gif.

Now to continue with the programming:

We added a very important mechanic: the respawn! Now, once you fall in the water you will respawn in an ice block on the platform you fell off of, and can continue playing. To break out of the ice block you have to button mash the right trigger.

Adding onto the respawn mechanic, we also introduced the health system. The players now have 3 lives in total, and when one of them falls the platform they lose one. Once the lives turn to 0, the game is over.

Apart from that, we refactored the player controller to be cleaner code-wise and easier to work with.

We also worked on the editor view: we added visual gizmos to interactive level elements to make level designing more intuitive and accessible:

We created a few puzzles going from easy to advanced. The puzzles contain the usage of pressure plates, crates, levers, elevating platforms, gates. All puzzles are saved as prefabs so we can easily spawn them in and change the course every time you play.

Thank you for reading our devlog and see you penguins next week!
