Devlog#2 The penguin evolves!

Hi all,

We realised that we didn't introduce ourselves last week. So without further ado:

We are a group of five students from Digital Arts and Entertainment at Howest Belgium.

Artists

Annelies De Decker

Katharina Alexander

Yana Bryon

Programmers

Stef Kluskens

Nir Yomtov

We are in our second week of researching the base of our game! Last week we weren't sure yet which engine we would use to make our game shine. Now we know! We are developing our game in Unity with URP: universal rendering pipeline!
Why? Well,  the programming language is C# , for our programmers this is easier to use. While the artists are only trained in Unreal Engine, Unity has a very intuitive interface and there is also a huge user base which means there will be a lot of documentation and tutorials to help us along the way. The ability to change so many options about the rendering and rendering pipelines, in addition to very intuitive tools, makes Unity a good choice for our game (and for the artists to finally learn!).
We are making a stylized game with a pretty basic lighting setup so we have the feeling we will be able to create a better game with this engine.

This weeks most important research is: IS OUR GAME FUN TO PLAY?

This is of course a very important question! Therefore we prioritized creating prototypes of gameplay.

Things we did this week:

- Creating a toon shader

Quick test of the toon shader

- Created a quick, cute penguin mesh

First look of model with toon shader

- Created an outline shader

Outline shader (thick option) tested on penguin model

- Worked on our artbible (concepts, shapes, colours...)

Character shapes - Artbible

- Created a ground plane with moving camera: We are thinking about creating our game in an isometric view

Isometric view of ground plane

- Created moving platforms

- Added jumping and interacting to player prefabs

- Different materials for each player

- Creating playable prototypes, try out our latest build to play the early stages of our game!

And with that, we are done for this week.
Thanks for reading! See you next week!
